Day 1 - Tuesday 15th
August 2005
This year's Fiesta is now
underway and a large stage has been erected on the Old Harbour which
will form the main area of activity.
Day One kicked off with the cherry pickers affixing bunting and
decorating the streets whilst villagers released fireworks and
rockets to announce thirteen days of celebrations.
At 18.00 games were commenced for children of all ages, including
model building with lolly sticks and copious amounts of glue.
19.00 saw the start of the "Clay Fighting"! Children
of various age groups
competed against each other in a large
paddling pool filled with a composite mix of sand and water.
This activity escalated to "mud wrestling for women".
Obviously it drew a large crowd and all participants (including
anyone within grabbing distance) evolved into 'statue like' beings.
Large buckets of sweets were on hand to be consumed, carried or
merely used as projectiles.
All those who took part were tasked with grabbing
anyone within reach inflicting huge amounts of
destruction on those who were already dressed up to the nines, for the later entertainments, on
their way to leaping into the harbour before they set solid.
The water in the harbour was sufficiently muddied but this soon
subsided whilst the inhabitants of the whole village arrived
equipped with a white plastic chair apiece and a theatre was formed.
"Around the World in Eighty Days" was then projected onto the back
of the stage for everyone's free amusement.
Day One came to a close, an altogether agreeable experience.
We look forward to the next twelve days of scheduled entertainment
and all round frivolity.
