The Village of El Cotillo
El Cotillo is still a relatively small fishing
village even though there has been quite a spurt of
building activity recently. Despite this building
work, El Cotillo is a very relaxing place. There are
no noisy clubs and bars. This is not the place to
come for clubbers! The main features of this village
are the beaches and the tranquility - this is the
place to come to unwind in the peace and quiet.
We have two harbours in the
village. The old harbour (el muelle chico) is, as
you’d expect, at the heart of the traditional part of
the village with the new harbour at the seafront of
the newer part of the village. Neither harbour is
large by any stretch of the imagination but then
neither is the village. The new harbour is from
where the local fishermen set sail and land their
catches but the old harbour is still important to
village life as it is the centre of many village
activities such as the
fiesta in August.
El Cotillo does not boast a
shopping centre or even trendy shops but it
does have numerous restaurants and bars offering a
variety of cuisines, ambiences and locations such as
the
Puerto Nuevo Restaurant near the new harbour which
re-opened in January
2007 under new management. Indeed, we have calculated that during a fortnight’s
stay in El Cotillo one could dine in a different
establishment every night and still not have visited
them all!
Some recent additions to the village
are two banks with Cash Machines, a doctor and a chemist
for "over the counter" medications and various first
aid and baby goods.
If this is not enough for you, there
is a regular bus service to Corralejo and
Puerto del
Rosario. If you intend to hire a car during your
stay, Corralejo is only 20 minutes drive away and
Rosario is around 40 minutes.
For those of you with an
adventurous nature, the Atlantic Ocean provides
waves for surfing and the constant breeze provides
interesting conditions for wind surfers & kite
boarders along the Surfer's Beach. Scuba diving is also pursued at various places all
around the island.
If you have come to relax, the lagoons
will be the place for you with it's large sweeping
white sandy beaches and safe swimming.
The numerous coves all along the coast provide lots
of privacy for naturists and those who wish to 'get
away from it all'.
