Puerto del Rosario
(Capital of Fuerteventura)

The capital city of Fuerteventura is Puerto del Rosario (Port of the Rosary).
Until fairly recently, the name of this city was Puerto de Cabras (Port of
Goats) as this was the main export. It has always been a working
port and tourism has only very recently been taken seriously.
The city is now undergoing a facelift with the promenade being tidied up, a new
marina being built and the main dock being deepened to allow larger Canary
Island cruise liners to stop off. There is now a shopping centre
(Las Rotondas) where you can buy fashionable and designer clothes amongst other
things and a host of shops all around the city. Be aware, however,
that most shops (apart from those in Las Rotondas) close for a siesta in the
afternoon.
There are numerous bars and restaurants around the city from simple coffee shops
to full 5 star treatment. The promenade is host to many such
places but they can be found on most of the roads around the city.
Every year, during the capital's fiesta in September, there is an international
sculptoring competition where sculptors from around the world convert huges
lumps of stone and marble into works of art. Over the years, a
mountain of sculptures have been produced and these have been dotted all around
the city. We have added a
map to show just a few examples of the many pieces that have been produced
and are available for all to see along with many other pieces that have been
commissioned by the council.
