Things To Do
El Cotillo is a small fishing village that is renowned
for its peace and quiet - a haven of tranquillity where
you can relax and unwind, de-stress from the constant
buffeting of 21st century life and enjoy the simple
natural pleasures.
El Cotillo provides wonderful turquoise water and beautiful white sand beaches
on the lagoons which, along
with clear blue skies and the comforting warmth of the sun,
are perfect for relaxation.
For the more athletic amongst you, the Atlantic Ocean
offers perfect conditions for body boarding, surfing,
windsurfing and kite boarding - all of which are
practised off the coast of El Cotillo.
To get away from the daily chore of cooking, the village
has a host of bars and restaurants where you can find a
range of different cuisines from simple snacks to
gourmet dining.
The miles of cliffs overlooking the surfers beach to the
south of El Cotillo provide a comprehensive network of
tracks that are perfect for hiking or biking though you
should be aware that some of the tracks are quite uneven
under foot/tyre and this might make you a little
uncomfortable after a while.
But what else is there to do on this huge island - the
second largest of the Canaries?
We have listed a few options below. They are
not exhaustive or in any particular order but are shown
here to help plan your stay on the island for those of
you with 'itchy feet' or for those occasions when the
sun fails to make an appearance...

Hiking/Biking
|
The whole island is criss-crossed by a
network of tracks and paths which are
available to avid hikers. El
Cotillo has miles of tracks along the
cliff-tops and up the coast to the
lighthouse and beyond along the north shore
to Corralejo. A book by Noel
Rochford called 'Landscapes of
Fuerteventura' (ISBN
1-85691-109-8) contains several
interesting and challenging walks around the
island as well as some car tours.
Also, the comprehensively detailed 'AA
Island Map of Fuerteventura' (ISBN
0-7495-3781-7) shows most of the tracks
and paths throughout the island.
The island council is in the process of
laying a network of cycle and pedestrian
paths around the island which will make it
easier underfoot for the uninitiated.
One can hire a mountain bike by the day or
week at 'Montaña y Mar' in El Cotillo.

Oasis Park
Zoo
|
There is plenty to see in this zoo which is
in the south of the island at La Lajita in
Jandia so we would recommend an early start.
As well as the many animals that are on show
in well tended areas, there are parrot
shows, reptile shows, seal shows and birds
of prey shows to entertain and thrill. There are free coaches that leave Corralejo
at certain times - check their website for
details and entrance prices. LATEST:
A free coach leaves El Cotillo at 08:20
every Friday from the Cotillo Beach Hotel
and returns at 17:45.
